"Those of us who were on the internet back in the ’80s remember when we treated it as a private playground. We could say whatever we wanted, to
whomever we wanted. After all, it was purely ephemeral. Nobody was keeping this stuff; like CB radio, you could be a total jackass and get away with it.

All those early Usenet discussions? Yeah, Google recovered them and put them online. Our beliefs were the exact opposite of true." - #af3e

We should be extremely careful before rushing to embrace an Internet that is moderated by a few private companies by default. Once systems like content moderation become the norm, those in power inevitably exploit them. /4 eff.org/deeplinks/2018/01/priv

Folks: yes, venture capitalists and Silicon Valley gave us surveillance capitalism but now they say they’re sorry and want to give us the cure. Shouldn’t we just let them?

Google says you can turn off its location tracking services on your phone at any time. An AP investigation has found that isn't true. t.co/wRqGuz3uL5

If anyone here's looking for an #opensource project to contribute too, please, please, please consider supporting one of the many great screen readers that help #blind and #visuallyimpaired users enjoy a more open - and less money restricted) computing experience. Orca in particular: the Linux screen reader that is a great tool that gets less attention than it deserves. Also TalkBack for Android (Google's been making it awesome with updates, but the opensource version is years out of date).

Fucking pissed at white dudes in free software prioritizing exercising their free speech by showing "look, I can make jokes which affect people not like me" and then being like "free software is a movement for everyone"

Nobody has ever questioned whether *I* belong. But I've tried to bring in plenty of other people who left because they didn't feel welcome.

I believe in free software, I want it to be a movement for everyone. Most of these people would say "I do too".

SO FUCKING ACT LIKE IT.

The empire strikes back: Apple, Spotify, Facebook and Google/Youtube all purge Infowars/Alex Jones. Yes, Infowars has frequent nonsense, but also a state power critique. Which publisher in the world with millions of subscribers is next to be wiped out for cultural transgression? t.co/XAEQWr58hw
